Studio / 工作室
Department of Mammoth Studies is an experimental studio founded by Zhang Ding and Naihan Li. We work through action filmmaking, spatial design, virtual production, 3D and AI-assisted tools to test new conditions for visual storytelling.
Technology is useful because it changes the cost and speed of exploration. It lets a small team test scenes, spaces and physical ideas that would once have required a much larger production. The centre remains human: bodies, choices, emotion, rhythm, danger and consequence.
这是一个以导演实践为核心的影像实验室。我们从动作、身体与空间出发,借助虚拟制作、三维技术与AI辅助工具,研究当下可以被真正拍出来的故事条件。技术不是主题;人的判断、身体经验与情感,才是。

Practice / 工作方法
We do not begin with a tool and search for an image to justify it. The work moves in the other direction.
我们不从工具出发,再为它寻找一个图像理由。工作路径恰好相反。Technology can multiply images. It cannot decide what matters. Every experiment begins with bodies, perception, emotion and a human reason to act.
人是影像的起点,也是最终要回到的地方。Action is internal life made visible. Movement carries rhythm, discipline, force, instinct, hesitation and response—before it becomes spectacle.
动作不是装饰,而是身体对世界作出的回答。A world is not a background. Architecture, material, gravity, scale and atmosphere alter what a body can do and what an action costs.
空间不是容器;它决定行动如何发生。Action-film practice, architecture, Unreal Engine, virtual production and AI-assisted tools form a practical laboratory for testing scenes that are otherwise too costly, too dangerous or too constrained.

What happens to action when gravity changes?
The film begins in a familiar 1G world and moves toward 0G. As weight, balance, impact and orientation begin to fail, action must find a new physical language.
Experiment 001 tests whether a human-centred action scenario can remain legible, exciting and emotionally charged while the world beneath it changes its basic rules.
项目从一倍重力的熟悉环境出发,逐步进入失重状态。当重量、平衡、冲击与方向感失效,身体必须重新学习如何行动。我们关心的不是技术展示,而是动作能否在新的物理条件下,依然清晰、有张力,并让观众真正感到危险与兴奋。

Zhang Ding directs the studio’s film projects and leads their action design.
Trained in martial arts since the age of seven, his knowledge comes from real action-film production: working with performers, directing crews, designing movement and entering the physical conditions of a shot himself. Wires, rigging, timing, impact and the stubborn fact of a body in space are not abstractions to him.
His practice draws on Chinese martial-arts training and Hong Kong action-film traditions, while testing what virtual production, games and AI-assisted image-making can open up for action directing. The point is not to make action easier. It is to take hard-won physical knowledge into less obedient worlds.
自七岁起习武,长期在真实动作电影制作中工作。动作设计、演员训练、片场调度、威亚与高风险拍摄条件,构成了他的实际经验。现在,他把这些经验带入虚拟制作、游戏与AI辅助影像之中:不是让动作变得更轻松,而是让身体经验进入更不讲道理的世界。

Naihan Li is an architect by training and an avant-garde designer in practice.
Her work moves between architecture, furniture, art, objects and virtual space. She is interested in what architecture can become once it is released from some of its usual negotiations with gravity, material, budget and planning permission—without becoming visually empty in the process.
In the studio, Naihan develops worlds, visual systems and the larger research field around each project. She does not direct the films. She expands the territory, introduces unreasonable questions, and prevents the experiment from becoming too well-behaved.
建筑师出身,设计师实践者。她的工作穿梭于建筑、家具、艺术、物件与虚拟空间之间。在工作室中,她负责世界构建、视觉系统与研究框架:扩大试验场地,提出不太安分的问题,并确保项目不会过早变得合理。
